Every time I go in to visit my good friend Jen who owns a costume shop, she asks about making props / armor. So since I'm going to be doing a lot of both pretty soon, I thought I'd document my process.
In this one, I'm using casting resin to make the armor for Jet's belt.
I don't suggest using a plastic cup or a straw to mix it in (it'll melt). A paper cup and a popsicle stick is best but I didn't have any around.
..Like so. Once it started getting harder, you're going to want to tape down the edges or else it'll try to straighten itself out. When it's all done, break it out of the mold and sand off the excess (wear a mask. You don't want to be breathing any of that in). Then paint and assemble how you like. :]
Heres what ours came out looking like:
This is why we can't live together, Jared. I HAVE A PROBLEM.
That would be my workshop-turned-storage-shed. All of that fabric in the back is all stuff that I bought that I might use for something. I'd see a good price on nice black fabric (I use a lot of black), so I buy a couple yards. Or I'll see some kind of cute print and I'll have to buy a couple yards. Just in case I want to make something out of it.
I'm horrible. I don't even have a place to sit in there because I turned the table into a stand for my dressform.
Now that we're all disgusted with my house keeping skills, here's some things I've been doing with my free time (besides playing 360 games).
I hate sculpting. Mainly because I have short, fat fingers. But I hate it. HAAATTE. So instead of making a bazillion tiny pieces out of Scuply, I opted to go the casting route since this way I'd only be molding one thing from clay.
And the hoop skirt.
Uh. I forgot to straighten it out before taking a picture. Hahaha. Anyway, the hoops are in the slip and I'm in the process of gathering and tacking tule to it to keep the hoops from poking out of the dress.
. . . Totally not going to be able to fit through doors.
