I realize I didn't post a blog about AX - you know, that thing all the nerds get excited for.
And theres a good reason for it.
I hated it. I've been going to the convention for 6 years and it has never been that bad. And with it in the LA convention center next year, I will not be attending. And possibly never again.
We don't have many pictures from it because it was just too hot to bother.
So here's the Trusty Bell costumes we promised. Just not with us in them.
I'll have to take pictures of the shoes later, because they were awesome.
Jared's still needs a lot more work. But it's not too bad considering that it was made in a week.
Jeez, all I seem to do now when I go to a convention is complain. Maybe I'm getting old.
I also seem to have developed a new allergy since then or possibly started then. Now, I can't be out in the heat without having a reaction. I even had to get a rush doctor's appointment for a shot.
Can I write off our AC bill as a medical expense now? ;o
With the first convention out of the way this year, I can't help but think that I'm getting too old for this. That, or the audience is getting younger because the maturity level was dangerously low. Never before had we actually have to take evasive maneuvers with the kids. We even witnessed one girl picking out marks and then hiding so that she may ambush the unfortunate person.
But you don't want to listen to an old fart complain about the kids these days, right? On to the pictures!
But now we get a full week of Jared in Bakersfield to work on Project: Unicorn Giggles.
Remember when I said that I hadn't had a day off since I'd been back?
Boy, did that come around and bite me in the ass. Now I have a ton of time off this week. So I spent the last couple days sewing up a storm.
I'm really anxious to get started on PUGs. Really.
So, I made the cloth parts for Jared's Jet costume and the majority of my Murasaki kimono. As well as some wig styling.
Once again I find myself with a lot of free time. Same problem as before, just a different diagnosis and with a full month off work. D'oh.
Fanime is approaching. So I thought I'd take this time to work on the costumes Jared and I would like to wear. Our line-up this year is Jet and Toph (Avatar), Roku and Murasaki (Pop'n Music), and Light and Misa (Deathnote).
He's got Light covered. And we've got Roku already halfway done. So the only real challenge is going to be Jet with his armor and weaponry.
And with the help of my Papa, we've managed to knock out the majority of the swords today. He cut out the shapes in the plexiglass (I didn't want to use wood. Too heavy) and I shaped them with my handy little dremel tool.
The armor is a different story. But it'll probably be make of leather and resin for the hip and shoulders.
I seem to find myself with a lot of time on my hands this week. I'm unable to work or even leave the house all that often and while getting some exercise is good, the cane I'm now dependant on is leaving me with a fat (and painful) bruise. I somehow developed a pretty serious case of Plantar Fasciitis. I was given an injection and told to stay home as well as wear a night split.
I've already become bored with video games.
So I thought I'd continue work on the monster I've been avoiding. (Hay, that micro funtion on the camera is awesome! look at all the imperfections it picked up!)
I was unable to find a fabric with a design suitable for the pattern on her dress. So what am I doing? Yep! During some sort of massive brain fart, I decided that it would be totally rad for me to embroider the pattern myself.
Well, at least I'm doing something constructive while I sit and stare at the TV for hours. Only nine more yards to go!
When it comes to costuming, I like to explore different ways to make things. This stems from being entirely self taught with this sort of thing. One day I went over to my grandmother's, sat down at the machine, and said "Teach me how to work this thing." Then it was all downhill from there.
I don't want to say that I'm "cheap," but really, I am. Or rather, I like saying that I'm "thrifty."
Now, I'm working on making a giant Elizabethan-esque dress and I find that I am either going to need about 100 yards of tulle or I'm going to have to make a hoop skirt. One thing you'll find out about me is that I'm extremely impatient. If I decide that I'm going to do something I want the materials right then and there. So ordering specialty hoops is out of the question - not to mention expensive.
So I do the next best thing and take a trip down to the local hardware store to look for something that will be sturdy but flexible enough to make nice circles.
What I find is plastic "Corner Guards." These are the things that you stick in the corners of a room. So I cut them in half and the work perfectly. You can see to the left over there the shape that my skirt is going to take. That's just the skeleton and it'll only look like that long enough for me to make a skirt to stitch the plastic into.
But I am feeling confident that it's going to rock.
The best part?
This whole skirt is only going to cost $15.
Sweeeeeeeet.
So.. I got some roses embroidered for the collar.
... Three down, thirteen to go. And that is just on the collar.
... Did I also mention that I'm doing this all by hand?
WHAT WAS I THINKING?
All insanity aside, I spent my Saturday dressed as a boy, eating cookies, and entertaining women.
Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for me), the only thing I made for that outfit was the rabbit sitting next to me.
I feel like such a cheater.
... And I call myself a seamstress.
Ahh.. well, the honeymoon is over and it's back to sewing, sewing, and more sewing.
Either I'm getting too old or the times, they are a changin'. Or maybe a combination of the two.
Or maybe this one convention was just incredibly boring.
But Ani-Magic 06 did not do anything for me. When I spend the majority of the time playing Animal Crossing or rollin' around on the grass with Queen Momo, something is not right in the land of programming. AND SOMEONE COULDN'T SHARE GUITAR HERO IN THE GAME ROOM.
Ah, well, it's out in good ol' Lancaster, California. So I can't expect too much, right? ;D
A few unfortunate souls got an eyeful of my panties when I bent over to pick up the Queen. Sadly, this isn't the first time I've done this in the Eureka costume. At Anime Expo of this year, the creators of the show asked us up on stage with them at their panel to take a few pictures. When all that was over, I thanked them and bent over to pick up my phone and badge only to hear them go "Ohhhh ho ho" and whisper something to eachother in Japanese.
.....D'oh.
Back to the costumes! That wig. That wig. That wig is made up of two wigs. I tore the wefts out of the two wigs and stitched them on in a way that would look like pigtails with a part in the middle.
And it looks effin' rad if I do say so myself.
I really don't have anything else to add... So I'll leave you with a picture of us playing even more Animal Crossing.
My sister decided today at dinner that she was going to take me to a sex shop.
. . . Strictly cosplay reasons only (she wanted shoes).
This was the first time that I had stepped into a place like that and the first thing that came to mind was "Wow. I wonder if they're hiring."
I'm not sure if that's the kind of reaction that you should be having when stepping into Ye Olde Sexitorium (It was actually called the Love Boutique). And while we didn't buy anything, I like to think that we both walked away with something. I know that I, for one, learned something new on this field trip. Did you know that they make sound activated vibrating panties?
Now you've learned something as well.
